Welcome to Athens!
Athens has been the center of Greek civilization for some 4,000 years. The capital of modern Greece, it’s still dominated by 5th-century-B.C.E. landmarks, including the Acropolis, a hilltop citadel topped with ancient buildings such as the colonnaded Parthenon temple. But it’s also a contemporary city. A lively, bustling metropolis with
colorful nightlife and fantastic dining.
Dedicated by the Athenians to Athena Parthenos, the patron of their city, is the most magnificent creation of Athenian democracy at the height of its power. It is also the finest monument on the Acropolis in terms of both conception and execution. Built between 447 and 438 BC, as part of the greater Periklean building project.
We'll begin the day with a private tour of this marvelous monument, then we'll saddle up, load our bags on the support vehicle, and like modern centaurs, we'll leave the city behind us and head out on the open road!
At the foot of Mount Parnassos,
within the angle formed by the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, lies the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. According to mythology, it is here that the two eagles sent out by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the navel of the world, met.
We'll begin the day with a private tour of the site and the nearby museum. Then we'll acquaint ourselves with the most precious staple of Greece, the famous olives and oils of Amfissa. After a break for lunch, we can drive down to the sea side town of Itea for some beach time and an evening stroll.
This day will be dedicated to fun and relaxation!
A short drive along the winding coastal road to the picturesque sea port of Galaxidi, a stroll among the cobblestone walkways, and perhaps some beach time. A tantalizing sea food lunch, and then we return to our hotel for some rest. In the afternoon we can drive up the slopes of Mount Parnassos to explore the mystic Korykeion Andron cave and witness the spectacular sunset.
Today, we set out again along the coast of the gulf of Corinth.
Our first stop will be at the historic town of Nafpactos, the place of famous naval battle of Lepanto in 1571. We'll walk among the ruins of the castle that sits atop the modern town, and then we'll descent to the fortified port for refreshments and lunch. We then cross the towering modern bridge at
Rion - Antirrion. Before we arrive at Olympia, we'll stop to sample traditionally made honey and sweets from a local bee keeper.
We begin the day with a private tour of the world renown site of ancient Olympia, the birthplace of noble competition. We then set off on winding roads over the mythical Arcadian mountains, through timeless forests of oak and fir trees. A stop at the picturesque village of Vytinna to stretch our legs and enjoy a traditional lamb lunch. Then, after a few more miles of winding roads, we arrive at the splendid town of Nafplion, where we check in and rest. Nafplion, with it's countless alleys lined with shops, restaurants and night spots awaits us for an evening of fun.
A day devoted to some historical exploration, and some fun in the sun! We begin with a short drive to the nearby astonishing theater of Epidaurus, the largest and best preserved in all of Greece. After our tour, we'll return to Nafplion for lunch, and the afternoon will be devoted to sea and sun. We can walk (or drive) to one of the nearby beaches to enjoy the cool blue waters of the Aegean.
A day totally devoted to leisure! A lazy morning where we can walk through Nafplion, explore the shops and sites. At mid day, we'll enjoy a short drive to a nearby artisan winery in the famed Nemea region where we'll enjoy a tour ans sampling, combined with a picnic lunch. The afternoon again devoted to some sea and sun! Perhaps with a short drive to the town of Astros, which lies on miles of pristine sandy beach!
Today, we check out after breakfast, and set off on our return to Athens. But the fun is not over yet! We'll stop at the site of Mycenae, the kingdom of mythical King Agamemnon, for a tour of the citadel and tombs. Then we stop at the impressive Corinth canal to walk along the bridge and enjoy a lunch in the area. Once we return to Athens, we'll say good by to our mechanized steeds and check in for some rest. In the evening, we'll get together in the lively Plaka neighborhood for a final farewell dinner! The evening will still be young by Athenian standards, so those who chose to, can excuse themselves for a night on the town!
Our last breakfast in Athens overlooking the Parthenon, and then we board our bus for the airport. We'll say our goodbyes, others returning home, and others on to more fun on the islands!
